I Love Discipline

Hi All!

Today we focus on the dynamic duo that significantly influences our success: motivation and discipline. Take it from someone who has tangoed with these two for YEARS.

Motivation is an exciting catalyst. It sparks our ambitions and propels us to embark on new ventures. However, it's transient. Once the initial thrill subsides, we are left searching for that original spark, and this is when people give up, this is when people start to tell themselves that they just don’t have what it takes. Then, they go back to their comfort zones, to never moving forward, to unhappiness.

Sorry for the “Debbie Downer” moment. There is hope! This is where discipline steps in. It's the driving force that maintains our productivity when motivation diminishes.

Discipline might lack the immediate excitement that motivation provides, but it's the reliable engine that keeps us moving toward our goals. When you forget why you’re doing what you’re doing, think back to that initial spark of motivation, step into that feeling, and then let discipline take over.

The key to consistent progress is not to rely solely on motivation. While motivation provides the initial drive, discipline maintains the momentum, steering us toward our goals.

As Aristotle emphasized, we are the result of our repeated actions. Excellence is thus not an act but a habit. Discipline helps in cultivating these habits, ensuring we remain on our path to success.

I’ve struggled with this for a long time and had to learn the hard way. I had to work hard at building discipline through habits. It can be done, and it’s much more peaceful once you master this. Let’s talk about habits in the next blog…
